Up to £87,644 per annum
Location: Truro, Cornwall
Cornwall is at the forefront of innovation, with our pioneering communities ensuring we are at the heart of the UK's technological, ecological and creative advancement. Our forward-looking economic strategy supports our simple, clear and inclusive vision – ‘Together for a carbon neutral Cornwall, where everyone can start well, live well and age well’. We are an ambitious council, always focused on improvement and always ready to acknowledge where we need to do things differently.
The sheer scale of Cornwall Council’s operations (with nearly 600,000 residents and a budget of over £1bn) mean it’s vital that we are an empowering and enterprising organisation, securing great value for money and providing a consistently excellent customer experience. While we’ve made significant progress in recent years, there’s always more to do, and this role will make a fundamental contribution to the next phase of our transformation and improvement.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and highly capable legal professional to take on a leadership role in an organisation that presents an incredible breadth and complexity of work. Promoting the highest professional standards within the Legal Services team, you’ll ensure that all areas of the Council benefit from expert, relevant and outcome-focused advice. As a senior adviser on legal issues (both for the Council and a number of external public sector clients), you’ll take personal responsibility for more complex and contentious cases, and advise elected members as required. And, as Deputy Monitoring Officer, you’ll help to ensure that effective governance underpins all our decision-making and practice.
Candidates will need a formal legal qualification, further enhanced by substantial post-qualifying experience. You will have a sound appreciation of local government governance and its legislative context. In Cornwall, you will discover a culture that is serious about professional development and succession planning. It’s the perfect environment for your career to flourish.
