Job Description:

£49,587 - £52,860 per annum

We’re looking for a Senior Lawyer to join our Litigation Team within West Northamptonshire Council’s Law and Governance service. This is a key role providing high‑quality civil litigation advice, representation and support across the organisation. You’ll handle a varied and often complex caseload, represent the Council in County Court proceedings, and play an important part in ensuring we deliver a responsive, trusted and professional in‑house legal service. The role is part‑flexible, with the ability to work remotely for up to three days a week, and is based at One Angel Square in Northampton.

What will you be doing?

You’ll play a key role in delivering high‑quality civil litigation work for the Council. The role involves managing a varied caseload, representing the Council in County Court proceedings, and supporting High Court matters such as judicial reviews. You’ll provide clear, practical legal advice to officers and members, prepare complex legal documents, and work closely with Counsel when needed.

Alongside your casework, you’ll supervise two colleagues, contribute to service development, share legal updates, and help strengthen collaborative working across the organisation.

About you

You bring solid post‑qualification experience in civil litigation, strong advocacy skills, and the ability to communicate legal issues with clarity and confidence. You’re comfortable managing complex workloads, supporting junior colleagues, and working in a fast‑paced environment. Experience within local government or committee work is helpful but not essential. What matters most is sound judgement, professionalism, and a commitment to delivering an excellent, customer‑focused legal service.
