Full time | County Hall, Glenfield | Hybrid working available

Leicestershire County Council has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Planning Lawyer to join its supportive and well-established Environment & Property Legal Team.

This is a specialist planning role offering a varied and influential caseload. You will provide clear, practical legal advice on matters that help shape growth, development and infrastructure across Leicestershire.

The role will include:
  • drafting, negotiating and advising on section 106 planning obligations and unilateral undertakings;
  • advising on major development proposals and strategic planning and infrastructure projects;
  • providing legal advice on planning enforcement, appeals, judicial review and other challenges to planning decisions;
  • attending and advising the Council’s Development Control and Regulatory Board and other planning-related committees;
  • advising senior officers and elected Members on complex or sensitive planning matters; and
  • advising on associated highways and infrastructure matters where these arise in connection with planning and development work.
The role may also involve advocacy or representation at inquiries, hearings and tribunals where required.

We welcome applications from solicitors, barristers and legal executives with substantial recent experience of planning law, whether gained in local government or private practice. You should have strong experience of planning and development matters, particularly section 106 agreements, and be confident providing clear, accurate and solution-focused advice to senior officers and elected Members.
Experience or knowledge of development-related highways and infrastructure matters, including agreements under sections 38 and 278 of the Highways Act 1980, would be desirable but is not essential for the post.

What we can offer
  • A genuinely planning-focused role with involvement in significant development and infrastructure projects
  • Regular exposure to planning committees and strategic decision-making
  • A varied and professionally rewarding caseload
  • A supportive and collaborative in-house legal team
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Opportunities to provide guidance and support to colleagues, commensurate with experience
The Environment & Property Team comprises experienced lawyers and support staff and provides a positive and inclusive working environment in which professional development is encouraged.
