At Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, we are seeking an exceptional Solicitor or Legal Executive to lead our Property Legal Team and provide strategic legal support across a diverse portfolio of high-value commercial and residential property matters.

This is an outstanding opportunity to combine complex, intellectually stimulating legal work with genuine work-life balance, flexible working and the opportunity to make a visible difference to local communities.

We offer:

  • Generous annual leave entitlement.
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, a valuable defined benefit pension scheme. To view the calculator see pension calculator
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.

Why Join Us?
As Legal Services Team Property Manager, you will lead a small, experienced team while managing a varied and challenging caseload. You will work closely with senior officers, elected members and key stakeholders, providing trusted legal advice on matters that are central to the Council's ambitions for regeneration and housing delivery.

No two days are the same. From land acquisitions and disposals to commercial leasing, development agreements and residential property work, you'll be at the heart of significant projects that shape the borough's future.

This is a role for a lawyer who enjoys both strategic influence and hands-on legal practice.

What You'll Be Doing
You will:
  • Lead and develop a busy Property Legal Team.
  • Provide expert legal advice to colleagues across the Council, particularly within Regeneration and Estates.
  • Handle a broad range of complex and high-value commercial and residential property matters.
  • Support major regeneration, development and property transactions.
  • Manage competing priorities while ensuring excellent client service and legal compliance.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and success of the Legal and Governance Service.
Your work will include:
  • Commercial leases, licences and renewals
  • Land acquisitions and disposals
  • Development and regeneration agreements
  • Residential tenancy matters
  • Right to Buy conveyancing
  • Easements, consents and property-related agreements
  • Strategic property projects and transactions
About You
We're looking for an experienced, motivated and commercially minded property lawyer who can provide confident legal leadership and practical advice.

You will be:
  • A qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive.
  • Experienced in managing complex and high-value property transactions.
  • An effective leader with experience supervising, mentoring or managing others.
  • Able to build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Comfortable working independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Skilled at balancing a varied workload and delivering results to tight deadlines.
  • Experience of local government legal practice and decision-making processes would be advantageous, although applications from candidates with strong private practice or in-house backgrounds are also welcomed.
The ability to converse with ease with other staff and members of the public and to provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for this post.

The role is hybrid working, with office attendance typically required two days per week, and to attend training and meetings. This will be more frequent during your training period.

The role is politically restricted.

About the Team
The Property Team sits within Legal and Governance, alongside Democratic Services, Elections and Information Governance
