Job Description:

GLD is involved in a number of high-profile public inquiries and reviews. The role offers an

excellent opportunity to work in a unique area which deals with high profile matters that

consider events of serious public concern.

The team provides legal advice and support to government departments on a wide range of

inquiry related matters including offering support to individuals who participate in inquiries

e.g civil servants and Ministers with preparation of their evidence and witness support and

dealing with disclosure requests. We also resource many inquiry legal teams and lawyers

will assist the Secretary and Chair in fulfilling the inquiry's objectives.

Previous experience of public inquiries/reviews and/or litigation (ideally public law litigation)

is essential. You must be able to demonstrate good written skills (including close attention to

detail) and an ability to work independently and under pressure. The post is likely to involve

carrying out extensive disclosure exercises, drafting witness statements, providing detailed

written legal advice and conducting litigation relating to public inquiries/reviews.

The post holder should also be able to do the following:

· Manage their own workload (including meeting tight deadlines to preserve the GLD's

reputation);

· Assist with the team's knowledge management/sharing objectives (also providing

input into client legal awareness projects);

· Attend and contribute to team meetings;

· Comply with Lexcel requirements, as well as policies, standards, procedures and

service level agreements set at the GLD, Litigation Group and Team level.

· Display the Civil Service Values;

· Keep abreast of legal developments and current thinking on related issues and use training and other methods to refresh and improve their skills and knowledge.

Following an induction period, the successful candidate will be expected to do the following:

· Take responsibility for their own workload subject to supervision (but knowing when

to consult and delegate);

· Use a process of analysis, planning, scheduling, prioritising, action, quality

monitoring and review;

· Keep files accurately and comprehensively updated on the case management

system (and, in some cases, on paper files);

· Display an understanding of the context in which the client operates;

· Display the professional attitude that the client and GLD expect from a member of an

organisation with a high reputation;

· Providing effective client care and managing all aspects of the client relationship for

each allocated case appreciating the particular commercial, political and policy

context.

The successful candidate should be seen to be working effectively with clients (adopting a

style most likely to build effective working relationships with clients; responding to

reasonable client requests including agreeing achievable and realistic actions, timescales

etc.; acknowledging client concerns and working to alleviate these in a way that balances

client and GLD needs; being alert to media interest which may have an impact on the

reputation of the client and/or GLD) as well as with colleagues and be displaying a positive

and helpful attitude in the conduct of their work
