Venn Group’s specialist Local Government Legal team is working with a District Council in the Midlands seeking an experienced Interim Monitoring Officer for an initial period of 6 to 12 months. 

The successful candidate will act as the Council’s statutory Monitoring Officer, working closely with the Chief Executive, senior leadership team and elected Members to provide high-level legal and governance advice.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Fulfilling the Council’s statutory Monitoring Officer responsibilities

• Providing advice on constitutional, governance and standards matters

• Advising senior officers and elected Members on complex and politically sensitive issues

• Supporting lawful and effective decision-making across the Council

• Leading on Member conduct, standards and ethical governance matters

• Identifying and managing key legal and governance risks

• Supporting wider constitutional and governance improvement work

Applicants should have previous experience operating as a Monitoring Officer or Deputy Monitoring Officer within local government, alongside a strong understanding of local government law and governance. Previous District Council experience would be particularly advantageous.

Duration: 6 to 12 months
Rate: Up to £900 per day Umbrella
