Locum Principal Childcare Solicitor – 3 months + – Full time, predominantly remote working – Up to £65 per hour Umbrella – East Midlands

Position: Locum Principal Childcare Solicitor
Organisation: East Midlands based Local Authority
Duration: 3 months with the possibility of extension thereafter
Working Pattern: Full time – Part-time candidates may be considered
Working Arrangement: Predominantly remote working – some occasional office attendance required  
Hourly Rate: Up to £65 per hour Umbrella

The ideal candidate will have a strong experience of handling Public Childcare matters in Local Authority and have previous management responsibilities.

Duties may include:

• Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of Solicitors, Legal Officers, and support staff, ensuring efficient service delivery and compliance with statutory court timetables
• Deliver strategic and pragmatic legal advice to Children’s Services, safeguarding teams, and senior officers on high-risk, complex public law cases
• Advise on and respond to pre-action correspondence in relation to potential judicial review proceedings
• Represent the Authority at senior multi-agency forums, safeguarding board meetings, Rapid Reviews, and Local Family Justice Board meetings
• Draft and implement local practice guidance, protocols, and inter-agency procedures to enhance practice consistency
• Oversee work allocation across the team and foster collaborative relationships with Cafcass, the Judiciary, and external counsel
