This is an exciting opportunity to join East Devon District Council at a dynamic time, supporting services across the organisation through the provision of high‑quality litigation and legal advice.

We’re looking for an experienced and motivated Litigation Lawyer to join our Legal Services team. You’ll play a key role in protecting the Council’s interests, managing a varied and challenging caseload including civil litigation, housing disrepair, possession proceedings, judicial review, injunctions and enforcement matters.   You will conduct advocacy in court and manage external solicitors and counsel as required.  In addition, you will support officers, managers and Members with clear, pragmatic legal advice.

Working closely with colleagues across Legal Services and the wider organisation, you will provide expert support across a range of contentious matters, helping the Council to deliver its priorities lawfully, proportionately and effectively.

About you
This role is ideal for a qualified lawyer with experience of litigation in a local government or public sector context, who enjoys balancing technical excellence with a practical, solutions‑focused approach.  You will be a credible professional with a collaborative and customer focused approach who is resilient and adaptable in a fast paced environment.

You’ll be confident working independently on complex matters, comfortable advising a wide range of stakeholders, and committed to delivering a high‑quality, customer‑focused legal service.  You will contribute to the development of legal services policies, practices and service improvements working collaboratively with colleagues both within the legal service team and across the Council to deliver and support organisational priorities and change.

About us
East Devon District Council is a forward‑thinking local authority that puts people and communities at the heart of everything it does. We are committed to flexible working, staff wellbeing, and continuous professional development.

You’ll be joining a supportive and committed Legal Services team, with opportunities to develop your skills and make a meaningful impact on the services we provide to our residents.
