Interim Director of Legal & Democratic Services

An established local authority in Yorkshire is seeking a Director of Legal & Democratic Services to lead a high-performing, modern legal function within a large and complex organisation of 9,000+ employees.
This is a key leadership role, sitting on both the Corporate Management Team and Senior Management Team, with responsibility as the Council’s Statutory Monitoring Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and develop an effective Legal & Democratic Services function
Provide strategic legal advice on complex, high-profile matters to senior stakeholders and elected members
Act as Statutory Monitoring Officer, ensuring governance and legal compliance
Oversee elections and electoral services delivery
Take ownership of information governance, risk, and regulatory responsibilities (including SIRO and RIPA)
Drive transformation, modernisation, and continuous improvement across the service
Manage departmental budgets and performance targets
Represent the authority at regional and national level

This position requires a collaborative and strategic leader with significant experience operating at a senior level within a large, complex organisation. You will play a critical role in shaping governance, supporting decision-making, and ensuring robust legal frameworks are in place.
