£48,226 - £51,356 per annum

Job Purpose:
The post holder’s main responsibilities will be those of a litigation solicitor, with an emphasis on criminal regulatory prosecutions, but may also include the ability to get involved with other areas of work relating to litigation, subject to the applicant’s experience, career interests, and workload capacity.

The role includes giving advice in relation to technical areas of criminal law, policy, governance, and the Council’s functions; conducting litigation; and where necessary and appropriate appearing as advocate for the Council in Court. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Job Specific Requirements
  1. To attend and advise such committees, sub-committees and other groups and panels of the Council as instructed by the Director of Governance and Legal, such as Licensing Committee etc.
  2. Provide general legal advice to Members of the Council and Officers of the Council and to associated bodies, companies and organisations as instructed by the Director of Governance and Legal.
  3. Implement or secure the implementation of those decisions of the Council relating to legal matters as may be allocated by the Director of Governance and Legal or relevant Operational Manager
  4. Conduct litigation on behalf of the Council, be responsible for the care and conduct of such proceedings and act as the Council’s advocate before Courts, inquiries, hearings and tribunals including contested hearing.
  5. Prepare matters and papers for any form of legal or quasi legal proceedings and undertake any statutory or administrative task ordinarily required of Legal Services by the Council.
  6. Deal with disputes and complaints.
  7. Keep abreast of developments in the law and to advise the Council through the Director of Governance and Legal Services from time to time on such matters as will impinge upon its functions.
  8. Assist in the provision of a comprehensive legal service to the Council.
  9. To support the work of senior staff and assist the work of junior staff on legal issues.
Corporate Requirements
  1. To participate actively in supporting the principles and practice of equality of opportunity as stated in the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
  2. To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions and to comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.
  3. To, as a statutory duty, adhere to the Council’s Corporate Safeguarding Policy and associated policies and procedures and to report concerns regarding the safety and wellbeing of children or adults at risk. In order to support you in this, you are required to access safeguarding training at the level which is relevant to this post.
  4. To actively support the Council to reduce its carbon emissions and deliver climate resilient services and places.
  5. As a term of your employment you may be required to undertake such other duties and/or times of work as may reasonably be required of you, commensurate with your grade or general level of responsibility within the organisation.
  6. Although you will be provided with a base, you will be required to work from various locations in accordance with the needs of the role.
