The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. We work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government.
We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems.
We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector.

About the role
We are seeking an experienced solicitor to join our in-house legal team. This is an exciting opportunity for a solicitor with expertise in Company Law, Governance, Local Government law including standard issues, judicial reviews, housing, planning, licensing, procurement, and commercial contracts. You will provide expert legal advice and support on a wide range of public and company law matters, including litigation, legislative implementation, and internal corporate matters. You will also support LGA partner organisations or subsidiary companies.
You must be confident managing multiple complex matters concurrently, be collaborative in your approach, possess strong technical and interpersonal skills, and adopt a risk-based and confidential approach to problem-solving.

We are specifically assessing candidates against the following criteria:
- Significant experience in resolving complex and sensitive legal issues in public law and corporate governance.
- Practical knowledge in Local Government law and related areas, including planning, procurement, commercial contracts, and grant funding.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality, proactive and timely legal services tailored to clients’ needs.
- Excellent problem-solving and organisational skills, with a strong concern for order, accuracy, and meeting deadlines.
- Up-to-date understanding of legal issues affecting local government and the LGA.
- Articulate communicator, with excellent written and oral skills and an ability to convey complex ideas in plain English.
- Flexible, ‘can-do’ attitude and adaptable to changing requirements.

Interview Date: 4 September 2025, interviews will be in-person at the LGA Offices, 18 Smith Square, London.
