Senior Criminal Litigation Lawyer – £55+ per hour – London – Hybrid Working
 
Job Title: Senior Criminal Litigation Lawyer
Council: London Local Authority
Working Pattern: Full-time – Hybrid (1 day office attendance per week)
Rate: £55+ per hour (umbrella)
Duration: 3 months+ (potential for extension)
 
Venn Group’s public sector legal team is working with a London Local Authority who are seeking a Senior Criminal Litigation Lawyer to join their legal team on a locum basis. This is a senior leadership role involving the management of a small team and handling a complex, high-profile caseload of regulatory litigation matters.
 
Job Overview:
The successful candidate will manage and supervise a team of lawyers and legal officers, provide expert legal advice, and lead on significant regulatory enforcement cases. This role is ideal for an experienced local government lawyer with strong leadership capabilities and expertise across criminal and civil enforcement.
 
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage and supervise a team of two lawyers and two legal officers
• Undertake high-profile and complex regulatory prosecutions in the Magistrates’ and Crown Court
• Handle cases including internal fraud, Housing Act 2004 offences, anti-social behaviour, planning enforcement, FOI issues, and licensing appeals under the Licensing Act 2004
• Represent the council in the First-tier Property Tribunal
• Act as legal adviser to the Licensing Sub-Committee (Licensing Act 2004, occasionally Gambling Act 2005)
• Support the Head of Law with governance issues and strategic legal advice
 
Requirements:
• Qualified solicitor, barrister, or FILEx Legal Executive with extensive experience in enforcement and regulatory litigation
• Proven experience managing legal teams and complex caseloads within a local authority
• In-depth knowledge of regulatory law, criminal procedure, licensing, and property enforcement
• Skilled in providing legal advice to committees and senior stakeholders
• Excellent communication, leadership, and case management abilities
