Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The island’s team of Law Officers is currently made up of the Attorney General with two PAs, two Legislative Drafters, Crown Prosecutor, Senior Crown Counsel (Civil), Crown Counsel (for Ascension Island), Crown Counsel (Civil), Crown Counsel (Commercial) and Crown Counsel (Contracts).
Supervising all legislative drafting for St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, you will be the principal officer ensuring that laws are properly and effectively drafted, published and kept up to date. You will recommend changes to laws including repeal of obsolete legislation, amendments to existing legislation and the creation of new legislation.
Your valuable legal input will include legislative drafting as well as advice associated with policy development, and you must assist in all proposed legislation passing through its required stages. You will appear before formal and informal meetings including Executive Council, Legislative Council, Select Committees, Island Councils, working groups, scrutiny committees etc. You will also audit, maintain and improve the legislation website and ensure the timely and effective publication of all Gazettes. Maintaining eligibility for a practising certificate, you must undertake CPD obligations.
A UK or Commonwealth qualified lawyer with experience of legislative drafting and drafting complex bills, subsidiary legislation and other statutory notices, you have a background in statutory interpretation, legislative research and policy development. Unequivocal compliance with Nolan Principles and with standards and rules of conduct required by your professional regulator will be demanded.

As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace, contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
