We are looking for a Legal Services Manager/Solicitor to the Council to lead its small but highly regarded, pro-active and approachable Legal Services Team and to assist the Executive Head and the Monitoring Officer.

About the role
Mid-way between London and the South Coast, and covering large parts of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty, Mole Valley is an attractive, predominantly rural district which includes the market towns of Dorking and Leatherhead. It is a wonderful place to live, work, do business and spend leisure time in.

Mole Valley District Council is a dynamic and progressive local authority known for effective partnership working and taking the lead on service transformation and new ways of working. This is currently evidenced by, amongst other things, a wide range of high performing services, an ambitious asset investment strategy and a major regeneration project, Transform Leatherhead.

The Legal Services Team provides a comprehensive service to colleagues throughout the Council, covering a wide range of areas including local government and administrative law, information rights, planning law, housing and environmental health law and licensing, company law and governance, property law, procurement and contracts.

The Legal Services Manager as Solicitor to the Council will provide legal advice and act for the Council on more complex matters and/or appoint and manage external legal advisers when required.

About you

You will:
• be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister (England and Wales) with or entitled to a practicing certificate;
• have knowledge and demonstrable experience of at  least two of the areas of law relevant to a district council (as detailed in the Person Specification).
• have demonstrable experience of successfully managing a team of professional staff;
• have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively at a senior level with elected Members, the Senior Leadership Team, other Business Managers and external partners and stakeholders.

Experience of working in a local government legal practice and of dealing with elected members is desirable although not essential.
