The Council is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced lawyer to join the Legal Services team. This is an exciting time to be joining the team. At the heart of Somerset, Sedgemoor is one of the fastest growing economic areas in the South West with a number of ongoing projects including being part of the multi-site Heart of the South West Enterprise Zone.

The legal services team provide legal advice to client departments within the Council, including both officers and elected members. This post will provide legal advice on a wide range of legal matters with specific emphasis on Commercial Property and Planning matters. The Council’s Planning Team is one of the best performing in the country.

The post holder will need to prepare both standard and complex property, development and S106 agreements and other planning documentation, as well as providing legal advice for committees including the planning committee.

The successful candidate will ideally be an experienced Commercial Property and Planning Lawyer with specific experience in the drafting of complex Property, Development and S106 agreements. They will also ideally have a knowledge of the full range of transactions types used for property acquisition and development, an understanding of the range of deals/structures/delivery vehicles available to deliver mixed-use schemes, and knowledge of EU Procurement legislation in relation to the development of land.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a wide range of legal duties and the ability to work as part of a team is essential.

The Postholder may also be asked from time to time to represent the Council in Court proceedings including Planning Inquiries and Judicial Review applications.

The ability to present information in both written and oral form with skill and confidence is vital to the success of this role. In addition, you will have excellent organisational skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
