Salary: The role will attract a salary in the range of circa £150,000 per annum, depending on the strength of job related skills and knowledge. A non-pensionable market allowance may also be available. Subject to Remuneration Committee approval.

As a Chief Legal Officer, you will be responsible for providing a first class legal service through the Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) to the Commissioner - for all MPS business, including: operational advice,  public inquiries and inquests, safeguarding and public protection, counter-terrorism and specialist crime, litigation, employment,  misconduct and regulatory work, and commercial and information law.

The Chief Legal Officer undertakes an active decision-making role as senior legal professional adviser - working personally with the Commissioner, the MPS Management Board and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). 

As budget holder with accountability for c.£15-20m and circa 160 staff, the Chief Legal Officer leads the largest police legal team in the UK. As a role model, the Chief Legal Officer will be responsible for the performance of the MPS Legal department, as well as building their required skills and expertise.

You will have a share of leadership responsibility. Whilst working within the MPS’ delivery of volume, breadth, complexity and importance – you’ll take on the challenge of delivering the ‘New Met for London’ action plan, which underlines our mission to deliver More Trust, Less Crime, High Standards. 

You will be joining the top of one of the country’s most iconic institutions in a unique and critical role. Your impact will be felt directly, making a positive difference for the whole organisation and the people of London. This will be a demanding post, requiring someone who is thoughtful, resilient and driven to achieve change.
