Starting from £49,400 to £54,305 per annum

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Legal Services Section, based on the South Coast in Worthing Town Centre, West Sussex, providing a joint legal service to Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council.  

We are looking for a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with at least 3 years’ post-qualification experience, to act as Senior Lawyer and Deputy Monitoring Officer for the Councils. 

You must have substantial knowledge and experience of local government law and practice and in particular Housing, Planning & Licensing experience would be useful.

Reporting to the Head of Legal Services and Monitoring Officer, you will be responsible for managing and leading staff within the Litigation and Regulatory Team. You should therefore ideally have relevant leadership experience, or have the proven ability to develop leadership skills. You will also participate in the continuous development and improvement of Legal Services through engagement in management initiatives with the service’s Management Team.

The successful candidate will undertake both contentious and non-contentious legal business, managing and providing quality legal services to all levels of the Councils and assisting the Head of Legal Services in the provision of corporate legal advice.

You will be required to regularly advise Members and Senior Officers, and attend Council meetings which will involve some evening work.

The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills; strong negotiating skills; the ability to apply the law to complex issues and provide clear, accurate legal advice; and be an excellent team player.

The Council operates flexible working practices.
