Job Description:

£45,859 - £50,840

About us

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council (SBC) is a Unitary local authority, providing vital services to meet the needs of the local community. We employ around 1,800 staff who are working alongside our partners and local communities to deliver the Southend 2050 ambition and make lives better for the people of Southend.

Working for SBC offers a challenging and rewarding career in local government within a collaborative and innovate environment, with the benefit of flexible working practices to support a positive work life balance. As a Unitary Authority we are responsible for all local government functions ranging from social services, transport, public health and parks through to planning, trading standards, community safety and education, so we offer a wide range of career opportunities. The diversity of our economy and communities and investment in a number of exciting regeneration projects makes our Council a great place to work, learn and make a difference.

Role

As part of SBC's general legal team, you will work closely with colleagues to deliver a broad range of legal advice from commercial contracts right through to property/regeneration and procurement.

Requirements

You will be a qualified Lawyer/Barrister/CILEX Fellow with a practising certificate in England & Wales. Ideally, you will be trained in private practice or local government and will have between 3 to 7 years post-qualified experience in commercial contracts. It would be a bonus if you also have procurement law and/or property/regeneration law experience, or at least an interest in those areas. Additionally, you will have a keen interest to get involved in company-secretarial matters alongside your day-to-day legal duties.

Benefits

This is a permanent position, paying between £45859 and £50840 per annum (depending on level of experience). When joining in a permanent position, you can enjoy a range of benefits including flexible working, salary sacrifice scheme and excellent training and development opportunities. The legal team has a very flexible approach to working from home and you will be encouraged to go into the office once weekly at the moment. Depending on the outlook in the new year, you may be encouraged to go into the office more often so living within a commutable distance to Southend-on-Sea is preferred. You will benefit from 24 days holiday plus Bank Holidays and a pension up to 23%. A full list of benefits provided by SBC can be found on the “Jobs at the council” webpage.

SBC is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications, regardless of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy or maternity, age or religion or belief. All applications will be considered solely on merit.

Closing Date: 7 December 2021
