Stratford on Avon and Warwick District Councils are joining forces to create a new shared Legal Team for South Warwickshire providing a full range of legal services to both authorities.

Stratford on Avon District Council already has a busy and professional legal team and we are expanding from 1 April 2022 to provide legal services to neighbouring Warwick District Council. 

We are seeking enthusiastic, adaptable and self-motivated Lawyers to provide solution-focused and practical legal advice to officers and councillors of both authorities.

You will specialise in one or more of the following areas of legal practice: planning; property; commercial contracts and procurement; housing; licensing,  regulatory and prosecutions. You will work in a supportive environment having your own varied caseload of legal work. You will be an integral part of the team advising senior officers and councillors on a number of high profile cases across both Councils.

Key Objectives:

To support the Head of Service and Legal Services Manager in providing a thorough, reliable, proactive, solution-focussed and accessible Legal Service to Members and Officers of Stratford on Avon District Council and Warwick District Council (“the Councils”), to external clients and to collaborative partners.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work will be allocated to individual post holders in accordance with their own specialist skills, knowledge and experience.
  • To assist the Head of Service, Legal Services Manager and Team Leaders in advising and assisting Members and Officers on legal matters in order to ensure that the Councils act in accordance with the law.
  • To deputise for the Team Leaders where necessary.
  • To personally provide, or facilitate the provision of, comprehensive, practical and solution focused legal advice for officers and councillors of the Councils, including the Management Team and Cabinets.
  • To attend meetings, including Council meetings, Cabinet and Executive meetings,
  • Committees, tribunals and working groups, to provide such legal advice and support to those meetings as may be required or necessary.
  • To prepare for and represent or secure representation for the Councils at any court, tribunal or inquiry as necessary.
  • To manage and deliver effectively a personal caseload of legal matters including those of a complex and/or sensitive nature.
  • To comply with the Councils’ constitution and policies and where required to seal documents accordingly.
  • To contribute to the provision on an effective, efficient, value for money legal service including the provision of legal advice and support for external clients.
  • To undertake such other duties and responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by
  • the Head of Service or Legal Services Manager or the Team Leaders within the Legal Service
  • commensurate with the grade of the post.
  • To be aware of your responsibilities in terms of health and safety, including identifying at
  • appraisals appropriate health and safety training

Local government experience is desirable but not essential provided you have an interest and commitment to local government work. We will accept applications from qualified solicitors, barristers and fellows of the Institute of Legal Executives.

Our Head Offices are located in historic Stratford upon Avon and Leamington Spa and we offer flexible, agile working arrangements including home working.
