Job Description:

With new remits and rapidly evolving markets, the Competition and Markets Authority offers unrivalled career opportunity. We are now seeking a Paralegal to provide effective and proactive paralegal support. It is an exciting time to join us.

As a Paralegal within the CMA’s Legal Service, you will provide assistance to lawyers, with a focus on the Information Law and Know How groups. In respect of information law, you will work closely with lawyers to help the CMA build and maintain an Information Law Hub by conducting legal research, producing legally sound content for use by CMA staff, assisting with internal training materials and by providing support in relation to requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act and the UK GDPR. In respect of Know How, you will support the team in the day-to-day handling of information resources for all CMA staff, research queries, organising training sessions and the monthly bulletin.

Your day-to-day tasks as a Paralegal will likely include:
  • Producing legally sound and easy to understand content for CMA staff, including information law updates and internal know-how guides and updates.
  • Collating materials and making the necessary administrative arrangements.
  • Arranging and attending internal and external meetings and case conferences, and attending hearings, assisting with setting up at court and taking detailed notes and responding to matters that arise at court as appropriate.
  • Preparing bundles, documents and tables as required, and in accordance with the relevant Tribunal/Procedure rules as appropriate; and maintaining all aspects of file and document management, including devising file organisation schemes.
  • Handling information resources – providing access, keeping intranet pages up to date, managing passwords and log ins, and staying on top of subscription renewals and procurement.
  • Monitoring CMA Know-how inbox and action requests in collaboration with other Know-how team members and dealing with staff queries about suitable information sources.
With a law degree or postgraduate diploma in law and previous experience in a paralegal/legal support role, you will have a good understanding of how to conduct legal research using online subscription services and experience of producing legally sound research notes. You will also require a good understanding of Information and/or Public Law, and some understanding of Competition and/or Consumer Law. If you can offer this, along with effective communication, analytical and organisational skills, we would like to hear from you.

In return the CMA is a hugely rewarding and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee well-being programme and favourable consideration of flexible working.

The CMA is an accredited Disability Confident Employer and are Stonewall Diversity Champions. As an equal opportunities’ employer, we welcome suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds and recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
