Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Solicitor to join Stratford-on-Avon District Council’s busy and professional legal team. We are seeking an enthusiastic, adaptable and self-motivated individual to provide solution focused and practical legal advice to our officers and councillors on a range of challenging commercial property matters. You will work in a supportive environment having your own varied caseload of commercial property legal work. You will be an integral part of the team advising senior officers and councillors on a number of high profile cases.
 
You will have strong property law experience and a positive ‘can do’ attitude. You will have a willingness to try new areas of law in order to support the team and our client officers and councillors. Local government experience is desirable but not essential provided you have an interest and commitment to local government work.
 
We are based in the heart of historic Stratford-upon-Avon and we offer flexible, agile working arrangements including home working.

Job Requirements:

  • To assist the Head of Service and Legal Services Manager in advising and assisting Members and Officers on legal matters in order to ensure that the Council acts in accordance with the law.
  • To deputise for the Legal Services Manager where necessary.
  • To personally provide, or facilitate the provision of, comprehensive, practical and solution-focused legal advice for officers and councillors, including the Management Team and Cabinet.
  • To attend meetings, including Council meetings, Cabinet and Executive meetings, committees, tribunals and working groups, to provide such legal advice and support to those meetings as may be required or necessary.
  • To prepare for and represent or secure representation for the Council at any court, tribunal or inquiry as necessary.
  • To manage and deliver effectively a personal caseload of legal matters including those of a complex and/or sensitive nature.
  • To comply with the Council’s constitution and policies and where required to seal documents accordingly. 
  • To draft and negotiate landlord and tenant documentation in connection with the Council’s property estate.
  • To contribute to the provision on an effective, efficient, value for money legal service including the provision of legal advice and support for external clients.
  • To undertake such other duties and responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Head of Service or Legal Services Manager within the Legal Service commensurate with the grade of the post.
  • To be aware of your responsibilities in terms of health and safety, including identifying at appraisals appropriate health and safety training.
