The Code of Practice on the English language requirement for public sector workers, Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 requires that Councils ensure that all candidates applying for customer facing posts must be assessed in order to establish their fluency in English.

The criteria under special knowledge and experience on the job profile which is shown in this advert outlines what level of fluency you will be expected to demonstrate.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide examples in your application.

We are seeking a legal officer to join our experienced and friendly team, dealing with public law children work. The role   involves providing support to lawyers in relation to care proceedings, pre-proceedings and other children matters, including attending PLO meetings, drafting statements and forms, collating evidence, preparing bundles and liaising with a wide range of other professionals, inside and outside the council. You will need to have relevant legal knowledge and the ability to manage a demanding caseload.

The work is sensitive, confidential and often complex and emotionally challenging in nature. You should be able to act under pressure in the face of competing demands arising from urgent situations and be able to interpret and communicate information effectively, use a range of complex IT packages and work to tight deadlines. The role also includes providing supervision and support to more junior staff.

You should have at least one year’s experience in a legal environment and hold a Professional Diploma in Law Grade 3 [Chartered Institute of Legal Executives] or demonstrable experience at that level e.g. preparing complex bundles for court, taking statements from challenging witnesses and liaising with Counsel when unexpected issues arise at court.
