Job Description:

Overview

Buckinghamshire Council is a new, ambitious Unitary Authority committed to establishing one of the best councils in the country and creating positive change for local people, communities and business. The recently redesigned in-house Legal Service is expanding to support the varied work of this diverse Authority and provide a wider range of in-house specialism.

We are seeking a number of legal professionals who enjoy working collaboratively to offer proactive, innovative and customer-focussed advice and to support the delivery of multi-disciplined, high-profile projects. The directorate is at the heart of the organisation and provides a fast paced and extremely rewarding career in a supportive environment. This is an exciting time to join us, as we grow and develop our service.

About the role

We welcome applications from Solicitors, Barristers and Legal Executives with relevant experience in procurement and contract law, built from a career in either the public or private sector.

You'll be part of a team who provide professional and commercial advice and support to various Council departments on a range of contracts, procurement matters, collaboration arrangements etc. You will manage your own caseload of commercial contracts and procurement cases, including those of a complex nature, advising and preparing documents in relation to the supply of goods, services and works including bespoke and standard form documents for areas including construction, ICT, social services, education, public health and concession arrangements; ensuring the interests of the Council are protected, and ensuring compliance with its Contract Procedure Rules and the Public Contracts Regulations.

About you

Naturally, you'll be highly motivated and proactive, with specialist commercial knowledge, and a proven track record providing pragmatic and risk-based advice which takes into account client's business needs and objective. Knowledge of local authority governance, trading companies, subsidy control and/or contract disputes will also be an advantage.

With a strong work ethic and a desire to learn from each other, our teams work collaboratively to ensure the best outcomes for our clients. Career development is something we are very passionate about at Bucks; we are committed to building an exceptional in-house legal service, utilising our colleague's talent and making the most of what they have to offer.

Nick Graham, Service Director of Legal and Compliance commented: 'This is an exciting time to be joining Buckinghamshire Council as we continue our unitary journey. As well as contributing to our ambitious agenda for our community, there are great opportunities to be involved in a range of rewarding legal work, in an incredibly supportive and flexible environment.'

Lessons learned from our response to Covid-19 have shaped the way we want to work in future. Online meetings via Microsoft Teams, and vlogs from our Senior Leadership Team have all played their part in allowing us to come together and work in ways which are even more flexible. We've adopted a new hybrid way of working, encouraging our colleagues to take control of their own work life balance. There will be times where you'll need to be in one of our offices or attend court in Buckinghamshire and further afield, but as long as it works for us too, we'd like you to take a flexible approach to your working arrangements.

If that's not enough reason to join us, you will be entitled to a range of benefits from Buckinghamshire Council including a very competitive employer pension contribution, generous annual leave allowance and discounts in local shops and restaurants.

Take a look at our dedicated career social media pages @bucks_careers for exclusive content from our Legal Team, and to find out more about life at Buckinghamshire Council.

We reserve the right to close the vacancy once we have received sufficient applications, so please be advised to submit your application as early as possible.
