This is an exciting opportunity to join our Commercial Law Team as a Trainee Solicitor and work alongside experienced lawyers on interesting commercial contracts, public procurement and property law matters

County Hall, Bond Street, Wakefield, WF1 2QW

Temporary fixed term for 2 years commencing on 1 September 2021

Practice areas: Commercial Contracts/Public Procurement / Property Law / Contentious and Non-Contentious Legal Work in other Areas.

We are looking to recruit a Trainee Solicitor to work in Legal and Governance for 2 years commencing on 1 September 2021, during which time you will complete a period of recognised training in accordance with the SRA’s regulations. The successful candidate will undertake a mix of contentious and non-contentious work to meet the requirements of the Practice Skills Standards.  Although the successful candidate will undertake work across a number of areas including contracts and procurement, commercial property, governance and litigation, the successful candidate will be based predominately in the Commercial Law Team and is therefore expected to demonstrate and maintain an interest in commercial contracts, public procurement and property law during the training period. Applicants should use the supporting statement to demonstrate this.

We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals who have, or will have, successfully completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and ready to commence work full time by 1 September 2021, and who are passionate and committed to the prospect of working in Local Government.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake the Professional Skills Course (PSC) during the 2 year training period. The Council will pay for the successful candidate’s first attempt of the PSC.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a 2:1 law degree or above (or equivalent) (or a degree in any discipline at 2:1 or above (or equivalent) and the Graduate Diploma in Law with commendation or above) and the LPC with commendation or above (unless exempted). In the event of a high volume of applicants the Council will shortlist candidates meeting this criteria.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an assessment centre at County Hall, Wakefield. The assessment will comprise a research based exercise and a practical based exercise. Applicants passing the assessments with a combined score of 70% or above will be invited to attend an interview and deliver a 10 minute pre-prepared presentation.

The post is predominantly office-based at County Hall in Wakefield.

Please note that previous work-based experience in a legal environment will not be recognised by the Council and deducted from the 2 year training period.
