Employer type:

Job Description:

£47,568 - £53,574 per annum. Salary negotiable dependent on experience

About Us:

At Westminster City Council (WCC) and the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea (RBKC), we hold a shared remit to create the best possible version of London. With neighbourhoods including Soho, Notting Hill and Covent Garden in our ‘patch’, we have much to shout about – but we are also focussed on supporting less affluent areas such to ensure a great quality of life is enjoyed by all. Quite simply, we want our capital city to be a true City for All, and as such, we have joined forces to create shared services that make best use of our resources and expertise. This has resulted in a wide range of interesting challenges across every sector – and underpinning each of these initiatives is our exceptional legal services team. Join us in our work, and you will have a real impact on residents and business in both boroughs.

The Role:

This is an unmissable chance to grow your professional and personal skills in one of the country’s most exciting legal services. Taking on an interesting caseload, you will provide advice on all aspects of contract and public procurement law. This could extend from drafting various forms of contracts for ICT and construction services through to negotiating advantageous terms with external parties and drafting procurement documentation.

Providing complex legal and procedural advice to Members, Officers, external partners and other stakeholders, you will advise on Public Contracts Regulations and the councils’ Standing Orders.

Delivering advice to a number of council departments on a wide range of legal and commercial challenges, you will be exposed to a wide array of opportunities – and there will be immense scope to develop your wider legal skills in other areas of work covered by our friendly and collaborative team.

About You:

As a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEx, you will have contracts and procurement experience, with a broad understanding of Local Government law. With the capacity to share specialist advice with Officers and Members on a wide range of matters, you will champion the Council’s priorities, working flexibly to adapt your approach according to each audience.

We work at pace, so you will be able to meet tight deadlines, and you will be a highly organised and commercially-minded individual who is capable of prioritising your own work. Bringing a can-do attitude to all that you do, you will match your enthusiastic approach and influencing capabilities with exceptional verbal and written communication skills, and you will be passionate about delivering a well-regarded and client-focused service.

The Council and its partners are committed to achieving diverse shortlists for all vacancies at Band 4 or above to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. If you are from a black, Asian and minority ethnic background (BAME), we invite you to self-declare this to the hiring manager as part of our positive action commitments.

What We Offer:

This is a unique opportunity to join a team that prides itself on a collaborative approach to delivering legal services. We work in an agile way, harnessing the expertise of both Lawyers and support staff across the department to deliver sustainable, high quality legal activities. As many of our colleagues volunteer and take part in charity work, there is a real sense of community here, further enhanced by our determination to help you enjoy a uniquely supportive workplace – all of which is evidenced by our recent wins at the Business Culture Awards in which we secured the Best Health & Wellbeing Initiative, while we were highly commended for our approach to diversity and inclusion.

As a progressive and innovative organisation, we welcome applications from candidates keen on working in an agile environment with flexible conditions. From generous annual leave through to a great work/life balance, we will see to it that you are able to balance your work commitments with your lifestyle. We will also underpin your long-term future with excellent training and development opportunities, and you will receive a competitive benefits package that includes multiple staff discounts and a highly desirable pension scheme.

At Westminster City Council, we are passionate about our aim to be an inclusive workplace for all that reflects the communities we serve, and we believe everyone is valued. We particularly welcome applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, including BAME, LGBTQ+ and those with hidden or visible disabilities. We’re committed to ensuring all our staff – regardless of gender, age, religion, sexuality, ethnicity or disability – can succeed. We value diversity and appreciate that people work in different ways. So, as a Timewise employer we work to provide flexible working arrangements and an empowering environment that enables you to be your best, that is the Westminster Way.
