Wakefield Council Legal Services are offering an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to help support the future development of the Compliance Law Team at Wakefield Council. 
 
This is a permanent post reporting to the Compliance Law Team Manager and is a key role within the Legal Service’s extended Management Team. The post holder will be an experienced lawyer who will also play a key role in providing excellent management support to an experienced team of lawyers and delivering service outcomes that meet customer requirements now and in the future. 
 
The main functions of the role are to undertake specialist legal work within the sphere of knowledge and expertise required for the position whilst also providing  advice, representation and management support across, where required, the range of legal disciplines within the Team.
 
The successful candidate will have a proven ability of working in an extremely busy legal arena and across a number of diverse areas of law - 2 or more of prosecutions and/or enforcement, employment, education, licensing, housing, civil litigation and Judicial Review – and have an advanced understanding of the nature of risk within their area of work and of measures to mitigate and reduce risk. 
 
They will be required to provide visible and supportive leadership, to motivate and develop high performing people and teams and be open to new ways of working and service development whilst supporting the management of the Team through effective performance management and use of IT systems. They will help manage, supervise and guide the Senior Legal Officers and help develop junior roles and trainees across the Legal Service.
 
The successful candidate will be someone who is a self-motivated individual, a gifted communicator, solution focussed and pragmatic, a problem-solver and negotiator.  They should be highly organised and able to work under considerable pressure while exercising sound judgement and sharp analytical skills. They will also have a proven track record in terms of representation in Court and/or Tribunal proceedings and will be expected to undertake their own advocacy.
 
The post holder will be a qualified and practising Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive. Applications are in particular encouraged from experienced prosecutors and those able to evidence experience and/or knowledge in the area of employment law.
 
The post is offered with the opportunity to work remotely and on-site in the office at County Hall in Wakefield.  The post holder may be required to attend other offices and Courts and/or Tribunals with differing frequencies.
