An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Swindon Borough Council’s Legal Services as a lawyer within the childcare legal team working directly with Children’s Services who have obtained a ‘Good’ OFSTED rating and have further plans to improve performance in place.
 
About the role
The childcare legal team are well regarded within the council, with private practitioners, CAFCASS, and the Court for providing an exceptional service and consistent advice and representation. We are a progressive team and embrace legal and technological developments such as being a part of the national trial for the Family Public Law Portal.
 
As part of the childcare legal team you will be responsible for advising and representing Children’s Services on matters relating to all aspects of their child protection functions. Swindon Local Authority has launched the Social Work & Leadership Academy and are committed to developing the best social work practice and the legal team are an intrinsic part of delivering truly excellent services to children and families throughout the borough; not just within the child care team but all aspect of legal services.   
 
We are evolving our in-house Legal Service to build a team with the right people and the right structure that allows us to respond to the innovation, improvement and growth around us and provide an excellent legal service to the council and our communities. We are interested in recruiting bright, committed individuals and providing them with a vibrant and supportive working environment to be as good as they can be.
 
About you
Any successful candidate will be will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or an experienced Legal Executive who is personable, confident and able to build strong internal and external relationships. You will need to be highly motivated, enthusiastic and work effectively as part of a team.
 
You should have a knowledge of Children Act work in the context of private and public law proceedings and have the ability to provide clear and concise legal advice. This is a career graded post and therefore appropriate training and support with personal and professional development will be provided to the successful candidate as required and applications are welcomed from newly qualified candidates or those changing discipline.
 
Experience of working within in a Local Authority or private practice childcare legal team would be of benefit. Experience of advocacy would be of benefit. A knowledge and understanding of local government and procedures, and an appreciation of the challenges facing local authorities is desirable.
 
The post holder must be open to working across the spectrum of social care law to include the provision of adult and child care legal services as these two areas develop and overlap within Swindon Borough Council as well as working with fostering and adoption services and defending Judicial Reviews.   
 
It is expected that the post holder will be able to work calmly and efficiently under pressure and deal with the varied and fast-paced work of childcare law.
 
Currently the team is working remotely however there are plans to return to the office environment in the future and the successful candidate should expect to attend face-to-face meetings and court hearings in line with changing government guidance.
 
Candidates must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act – for the effective performance of a customer-facing role).
