Senior Lawyer (Contracts and Commercial)

There has never been a more interesting and exciting time to work within the Law and Governance Directorate at Wirral Council. We are busy expanding our team of lawyers, to provide us with the right mix of people and skills to respond to the innovation, improvement and growth around us and provide an excellent legal service to the Council and our communities.

In order to achieve our objectives we are looking for a Senior Lawyer (Contracts and Commercial). This is an exciting role that will focusing on Contracts and Commercial, providing forward thinking, customer focused and professional legal advice, support and assistance to the Council, Senior Leaders, Members and Partners. This role will be to support the success of large-scale regeneration activity and economic growth ambitions for Wirral.

The post holder will manage all litigation in relation to contracts and commercial to ensure the Council’s interests are safeguarded. A key requirement will also be to provide high quality, constructive legal and constitutional advice and assistance to Council, Cabinet, Council committees/panels, members and senior management.

We are looking for someone with strong leadership and relationship management skills, with a passion and drive to deliver results consistently and provide high standards of customer care. You will be a qualified and practising barrister, solicitor, legal executive (Fellow) or equivalent (subject to or awaiting QLTS). You will further have a least 3 years post qualification experience (as per the Law Society). Your experience will include the ability to deal with complex matters within relevant areas of law, having provided advice, guidance, and support in a wide variety of cases. Your knowledge will further demonstrate understanding and awareness of local government legislation and current local government issues including governance arrangements, decision making and corporate governance.

The successful candidate will have a positive, ‘can-do’ style of working whilst having the confidence to challenge the status quo and show tact, diplomacy, empathy and politically awareness with resilience, especially in dealing with competing and demanding pressures and potentially emotionally difficult situations and information. Ultimately, you will demonstrate a commitment and enthusiasm to making a difference for residents, you will role model our values and will be an ambassador for the Council.
