Job Description:

£45,387 - £63,387 per annum

Work Location: 64 Victoria Street, London SW1E 6QP

At Westminster City Council, we believe in creating a ‘City for All’. Somewhere people are born into a supportive and safe environment. Somewhere they grow and learn throughout their lives. Somewhere they can live in high quality, affordable homes. And somewhere they can benefit from the very best town and country planning. This is our vision for the Westminster community. And this is your chance to be part of it.

As a Senior Solicitor for Planning, you’ll provide crucial expert advice and guidance to internal clients and colleagues across town and country planning, enforcement, tree preservation matters and associated highways advice. It’s a highly varied and stimulating role which offers diverse legal work but also the chance to make a genuine impact on our outstanding local authority in the heart of London.

Alongside legal advice, you’ll take on a significant caseload including high-profile, politically sensitive cases, working together with our most senior solicitors in the process. You’ll also help us prepare for judicial reviews, public inquiries and hearings and achieve the best outcomes when negotiating on behalf of Westminster with external parties.

Beyond your central duties as a senior solicitor, the role also offers the chance to develop policy issues, shape our legal service delivery and develop other colleagues and clients. Leadership is a very important part of the role, extending to representing us at meetings with government departments, other local authorities and external stakeholders.

As a progressive and innovative organisation, we welcome applications from candidates keen and able to work in an agile environment with flexible conditions.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information.

We’re looking for admitted lawyers or barristers with an impressive and in-depth knowledge of relevant local government law, town and country planning, highways law, court and planning inquiry procedures.

Naturally, you’ll be an excellent skilled communicator, with good negotiating and influencing skills and the ability to work constructively with all kinds of people.

Though it isn’t essential for the role, we’re also looking for lawyers with experience in addressing committees, preparing complex reports and experience of working collaboratively on large projects.

The Council and its partners are committed to achieving diverse shortlists for all vacancies at Band 4 or above to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. If you are from a black, Asian and minority ethnic background (BAME) and would like to self-declare this to the hiring manager as part of our positive action commitments, please do so.

This is your chance to take real ownership of your work, right in the heart of Westminster, a true ‘City for All’ and a flagship council. This is a one-of-a kind place where different ideas and perspectives are welcome, and your work truly matters. We never stop aiming higher – join us and help shape our city for years to come.

We also offer a generous pension scheme from the start of your employment under LGPS (Local Government Pension scheme).
