Employer type:

Job Description:

£68,709 - £71,218

Workbase: Usually this role is based in Cumbria House, Carlisle but due to COVID-19, it will involve homeworking/working from home.

At Cumbria County Council we know how important it is to develop services and do things differently – and we are always focussed on how we can improve outcomes for our communities. Across the county, we are working with residents, businesses, communities and partners to deliver the best services possible, and we know we have to do that within the available resources. By working together, we will ensure that people in Cumbria are healthy and safe; that places in Cumbria are well connected and thriving; and that our economy is growing and benefits everyone.

We are currently looking for a dynamic and innovative Head of Legal and Democratic Services to join our team at an exciting time of growth and expansion.

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, you will work at head of service level, responsible for managing legal and democratic services.

You will also be Deputy Monitoring Officer, giving you a great opportunity to work at a strategic level with senior officers and Members on key and sensitive issues. At a time when we are undergoing an exciting expansion of the team and introducing a ‘business partner’ model, you will be able to develop and mould a service known for professional excellence across all areas; a service that promotes and develops strong, collaborative relationships with the departments that it supports.

We are seeking appropriately qualified candidates with senior management experience in a local government legal setting, and a strong working knowledge of local government law and governance. You will have good political awareness, having worked in a politically sensitive environment, as well as an understanding of the need to facilitate good decision making within the council and provide officers and Members with pragmatic solutions to issues.

This is a fantastic challenge for an ambitious leader to take that next step and shape and develop this service. At Cumbria County Council we pride ourselves on our commitment to ‘grow our own’, and as such we offer a wide range of training and progression opportunities.

Long listing: w/c 20th July 2020

Preliminary interviews: w/c 27th July 2020

Final panel: w/c 10th August 2020
