Truly flexible legal practice opportunities in a newly formed team

About us

As one of the UK’s fastest growing towns, in Swindon we understand what matters to our residents: an affordable home, good education, job opportunities and quality of life in a great location.

That’s why we’re working with partners to deliver our ambitious vision for Swindon so that the borough continues to thrive in the future and benefits from well-managed growth, investment and regeneration.

We now have a need for an experienced and skilled Principal Lawyer who’ll lead the newly formed Commercial Team consisting of property, planning, contracts and procurement solicitors. The successful candidate will join our newly re-structured Legal Services Team and will have the chance to influence and shape our strategic agenda.

About the role

In this instrumental role you will lead, manage and encourage a team of solicitors to provide an efficient, cost effective service which will inspire the confidence of officers and members alike.

You’ll oversee the delivery of timely execution of instructions and provision of relevant advice enabling and supporting the delivery of the Council’s objectives. As a key member of the management team within Legal Services, you’ll share both management and leadership of the Service.

View our vision

We are focused in supporting your professional development and can offer award winning leadership development programmes as well as coaching and mentoring networks.

These positions are available due to a recent restructure and to ensure we are fully aligned with the strategic and ambitious direction of our organisation.  With a newly appointed Chief Legal Officer this is an ideal time for you to make your mark and contribute to shaping the highly valued Legal Services Team.

This role is 37 hours per week but we operate an agile working policy, allowing you to manage your own diary and work flexibly, including off-site/remote working.

With a thorough understanding of the strategic contribution that Legal Services makes to the organisation, you’ll be committed to high quality public services and local democracy.

You will be able to communicate complex issues in simple terms and will have advanced leadership and management skills, particularly with reference to managing performance.

In return for your talents, we offer a range of benefits including:
