Job Description:

Are you an experienced construction contract lawyer with significant experience of major projects? In addition to possessing excellent legal skills and knowledge, do you have excellent client care skills and the ability to build relationships with new and existing clients? Are you interested in contributing to a service which aims to do majority of project work in-house and to be the first-choice for clients?
If yes, then you might be the one to join our Bi-borough Legal Service. We provide the full range of legal services to Westminster City Council, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and various other entities associated with them e.g. trading companies.

Both councils are embarking on significant development and construction projects, as a consequence of that, and owing to corporate restructuring of both councils’ housing functions, a need has arisen for an experienced specialist construction lawyer to join the contacts and procurement team and be the lead lawyer on those projects.

You will have significant experience of all the major standard form construction and other contracts particularly the JCT suite and the NEC suites 3 and 4, as well as the ancillary documents that traditionally feature in construction projects such as collateral warranties and consultants and Architects appointments, etc. You must be able to draft those documents and appropriate amendments to them on a general and project specific basis.

On a day to day basis you will advise orally and in writing at all levels within the councils up to and including Cabinet Members and Executive Directors and on project boards. In addition to advising on contract interpretation, you will provide risk -based advice including in relation to risk management and mitigation.

You will frequently lead the legal negotiations with potential contractors and advise on legal negotiation strategy. You will be highly organised, with a good understanding of project management and have the ability to proactively help clients manage large projects.

The projects with which you will be involved range from small to very large-scale. For example, high value design and build projects, regeneration schemes, public realm projects, repairs and maintenance projects etc. any of these significant value projects and will also be high profile.

The Bi-Borough Legal Services team works in a collegiate environment and is undergoing an exciting period in its development. It provides good opportunities for the right candidate to contribute as a lawyer and also as a leader and grow personally and professionally.

The Council and its partners are committed to achieving diverse shortlists for all vacancies at Band 4 or above to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. If you are from a black, Asian and minority ethnic background (BAME), we invite you to self-declare this to the hiring manager as part of our positive action commitments.
