Situated in the heart of the country, North Warwickshire’s rural landscape, rich heritage and excellent transport links combine to make it the perfect place in which to live and work. North Warwickshire Borough Council are seeking an experienced and suitably qualified person to take on an exciting, diverse and crucial new role to lead our Legal Team. 

The Head of Legal Services is responsible for acting as the Council’s principal legal advisor and Monitoring Officer, fulfilling the role of Solicitor to the Council, and providing a comprehensive, professional and progressive legal advice service to the Council. The role includes managing and leading the Legal and Estates Division, and you will also be the designated Data Protection Officer. You will also manage the Democratic Services Division, in respect of Boards/Committees in accordance with the relevant statutory frameworks and policies of the Council. This includes planning the future needs of the section, ensuring a quality service is provided, and to consult users in respect of required changes.

Reporting directly into the Chief Executive, you will be at the heart of the organisation and this role will interest lawyers with wider career aspirations. You are likely to have a strong background in planning law, as well as information and governance issues.

The successful candidate will work to safeguard the interests of the Council by providing strategic legal advice to Chief Officers and Elected Members on sensitive and highly complex legal matters through high quality legal advice, offering relevant advice and support to managers and employees on all elements of the law and best practice as it relates to Local Authorities. You will deliver a legal service that meets the needs of the Council and plays an influential and corporate role in assisting the Council to meet its aspirations.

A relevant professional qualification is essential to this role, as either a qualified lawyer or barrister or equivalent, with practitioner and management experience in a field of expertise relevant to the role, with an understanding of the commercialisation agenda in public legal services. You must have a high degree of motivation and personal enthusiasm, a proactive approach to service provision, and the ability to portray a confident and professional image.

The role involves liaising with a wide range of stakeholders, therefore excellent communication skills, with the ability to facilitate and communicate ideas and knowledge is essential. A full valid driving licence is also essential.

This is a politically restricted post in accordance with Section 2(1) (b) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.
